For those wishing to discover the southern part of the Venice Lagoon, the Tourist Promotion and Navigation Agency ATN South Lagoon offers naturalistic itineraries by boat in the valley area of the southern lagoon up to Pellestrina.
South Lagoon Itinerary
The Southern Lagoon itinerary (full day 9: 30-17: 30) starts from the Cornio canal, an ancient branch of the Brenta river, along which it is possible to observe numerous species of birds that find food and shelter on the shallow waters of the bends.
Along the banks of the valley areas, you arrive at the Valle Zappa fishing house where you make a guided stop to observe the fixed structures for catching fish.
From the valley you then reach the Pellestrina beach, characterized by the presence of numerous small brightly colored houses.
Here a stop allows visitors time to have lunch with fresh fish products and to visit the town.
The navigation then continues along the ancient Istrian stone wall until you reach the valley area again and here, after a stop on land at the unusual Dutch-style Hunting Lodge of Valle Zappa, we leave again to reach the point of departure.
Fishing valleys itinerary
The fishing valleys itinerary (half day 9:00 am- 1: 00 pm or 2:30 pm – 6:30 pm) starts from the Cornio canal, characterized by luxuriant vegetation, along the Averto, Cornio and Contarina valleys until reaching the lagoon Viva.
Along the banks populated by tamarisk trees, we arrive at the fishing house of Valle Zappa, the first stop on the tour.
We then continue sailing towards the ruins of the abandoned casoni of Prime Poste and Millecampi up to Valle dei Settemorti, to relive the traditions and legends of the fishing valleys of the southern lagoon through the story.
From here the route is then reversed to reach the starting point.
Info and excursion details
The service is available upon reservation from March to November and the excursions are organized on weekends and, for groups, also on weekdays. The boats used by ATN Laguna sud are typical Venetian motorboats, completely renovated and adapted to the lagoon environment, equipped with a panoramic deck and toilets. The excursions depart from the agency’s headquarters in Valle Cornio, in Lova di Campagna Lupia, on the S.S. Romea 309 (E55) which connects Venice / Mestre to Chioggia / Ravenna, at the 110 kilometer sign.
For those coming from the Venice / Mestre direction the access to Valle Cornio is on the left, 2 km after the Lugo exit. After having displayed the 110 km sign, it is preferable to continue about 1 km further to make a U-turn in the petrol station square on the left, in this way you will have an easier entrance on the right. For those coming from the Chioggia / Ravenna direction, the entrance is on the right after the exit for Lova. A guarded and free parking area is available for participants in Valle Cornio.
From Venice or Chioggia the agency can be reached by public transport from the Actv, extra-urban line n° 80, stop on request in Valle Cornio.

Perhaps little known, this area offers a naturalistic landscape that has remained intact to the passage of man, so much so that it also houses a WWF oasis: the Valle Averto oasis where guided tours take place in a breathtaking landscape.
During the period from March to November, naturalistic excursions along the valleys and hunting and fishing huts of the South Lagoon are carried out through the South Lagoon ATN, the Tourism and Navigation Promotion Agency, experiencing the experience of Birdwatching.
The routes are of two types, Full or Half Day, and tell of an area rich in flora and fauna with eel farms and visits to casoni, typical constructions suitable for fishing or hunting in the Nordic style. The hotel staff can advise and inform you about everything.
